Demanding customer requirements continue to challenge the capabilities of conventional processing architectures, often exceeding what is technically possible. Processing requirements grow while power budgets shrink.
Sacrificing programmability to achieve better performance, synthesized ASIC designs approach 8 pJ/op (or about 125 GOP/s/W), but at the expenses of high development time, cost and risk. Most DSPs, FPGAs and GPPs are not able to drop below 250 pJ per mathematical operation in performance, equating to less than 4.0 GOP/s/W.
